Winchester Tree Surgery

Tree felling and removal, for example, can be hazardous to people and to buildings, so we believe it's imperative to take the utmost care when doing any type of tree work. Tree Removal

Our professional arboriculturists will carefully and safely remove live or dead trees when needed. Trees are wonders of nature and a great asset to our environment so we'd always rather leave them alone or prune so they can be accommodated on your land, especially when they are beautiful ancient oak or ash. But there are occasions when we just can't live with trees that block out light or are preventing extension or building work. Or perhaps trees are diseased and have to be removed before they infect others or become a danger. We will discuss with you how the work is to be done and cause minimum disruption, removing stumps where required and leaving the area tidy.

Tree Cutting, Pruning and Trimming

Most trees benefit from pruning and trimming to maintain their shape or to remove dead and dying branches. Our skilled arboriculturists will carefully cut out dead wood and prune where necessary to improve the structure of your trees.

There are a variety of different types of pruning and here are some of the most common:

Crown lifting involves removing some lower branches and is often required where larger trees overhang paths and buildings
Crown thinning, which needs to be done carefully to maintain the overall shape of the tree. By removing selected branches and deadwood within the crown, more light and air is allowed to circulate, improving the health of the tree
Crown reduction will reduce the overall size of the tree by shortening branches. This method needs to be selectively applied and is not suitable for all trees, eg birch and conifers.

Tree Felling

We don't like to fell mature trees if there's any other option, but unfortunately they have often been planted in inappropriate areas or have grown too big for their situation so there may be no alternative if roots are damaging nearby property or if you wish to build in the vicinity.

When tree felling is necessary, we will assess the situation and safely remove trees using an appropriate method. We can leave the stumps if you prefer or remove or grind tree stumps, leaving the area clear for further planting, landscaping or building.

Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)

Before working on trees, it's important to know whether any tree preservation orders have been placed on them. It is illegal to even prune trees that have been protected but we can help and liaise with the local authority to gain the relevant permission.

Tree Clearance

Over periods of time nature can take over and it's surprising how fast this can happen. Some species of tree quickly seed and grow, creating a problem when you want to landscape an area or add buildings. We can clear unwanted trees and remove the debris, leaving your land ready for your project.

Site clearance may also include removing brambles and invasive weeds, as well as sometimes more obnoxious plants such as giant hogweed, which can be very hazardous, causing serious skin problems, especially to children.

Leyland Cypress Removal

Leyland Cypress or Leylandii trees can often cause problems, especially in small gardens. They may be planted with the intention of providing a quick hedge or screening and to be fair they do a good job! Unfortunately it doesn't stop there and these trees can turn into monsters, taking over gardens, growing very tall and creating areas where nothing will grow as they cut out light and make your house dark.

Although these conifers may have a place, they are often unsuitably sited so we can remove Leyland Cypress trees where necessary. They may also be trimmed as a hedge, but usually die back after a number of years, leaving dead patches which are unsightly and bare. Call us for advice on removing Leylandii hedges and trees

Hedge Cutting

Winchester Arborists will make a great job of trimming and shaping your hedges, whether you have formal garden hedging or less-formal old country hedges. We'll use the appropriate equipment and leave neat hedging.

We'll advise you when this work should be done in order to keep your hedging in the best condition and to avoid disturbing nesting birds. We always aim to work with nature whenever possible.

Stump Removal

Tree stumps come in all shapes and sizes. Some may be suitable to turn into beautiful carvings to enhance your garden and draw the eye, or can be made into seats or other features. But often tree stumps get in the way and provide an obstacle course or a tripping hazard! In some situations it may be better to allow them to rot away naturally, although this often takes many years. Or you may prefer to have tree stumps removed or to have them ground to the level of the surrounding soil.

Whichever option you choose, we can undertake stump removal or grinding, leaving your garden hazard-free and more usable.
